Cinemagraphs: the still/moving image
Digital Imaging in the Visual Arts
Prof. Claudia Esslinger

As a bridge between our still images and moving images, we will explore cinemagraphs.  These are short gifs that are mostly still where something is expected to move and move in another area in a simple loop.  They are used widely for advertising on websites to attract attention for products without taking up too much bandwidth.

You can use some of the subject matter of your Magically Real Vista if you want, as well as your image as part of the project.  You can also choose to make a completely new piece.  In any case you will have to re-film because you will be starting with video imagery.

The element that moves draws attention to itself of course, and in that way could complicate the content of the image or be curiously surreal.

Goals:
To learn to use the video camera and good lighting
To learn to edit video in photoshop
To develop a curious content where the moving element draws the viewer in.

Check out the cinemagraphs page on esslingersclasses.com.  Parisa Ghaderi has the most meaningful cinemagraphs I’ve encountered, though they are presented here as videos that need you to select PLAY.
